Why you should remove your sim card numbers from the sim card

200 Points
On the back of your physical SIM card is a globally unique number, the ICCID. Remove it with some sandpaper so that you cannot be identified by it and your provider in the event of confiscation.

When can I tick off this task?

You have completed this task if the SIM card number on the back of your SIM card is no longer legible or if you simply do not have a physical SIM card.

Why and for whom is this task important?

Political activism

Politically active people are often dependent on keeping their identity secret. By confiscating the phone and tracing the ICCID via the provider, the person who concluded the associated mobile phone contract can be identified.

Migration, flight and asylum

People who are on the run sometimes do not want to reveal their identity. However, the authorities may be able to use the ICCID and the provider to determine their identity. So far, however, no such case is known to this project.

More information and details

Please be careful when doing this and take care not to destroy the chip. So don't go too deep! Of course, this only applies to physical SIM cards. eSims do not have such a number.

Try to remove the number as completely as possible. Otherwise it may be possible to reconstruct the country of origin and provider from some of the digits. This information is also part of the ICCID.
