ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is a US federal agency that is supposed to monitor and deport migrants, but in practice is known for systematic violence and abuse. It carries out raids in residential areas, workplaces and on the streets, which repeatedly result in fatal violence by police officers. It carries out mass detentions and deportations that tear families apart and put entire communities in constant fear.
People without papers are particularly affected, as are people with legal status and supporters. It is therefore essential for many to inform themselves about their rights, warn each other about ICE checks and surveillance and also prepare their smartphones: for example, by using strong passwords, up-to-date software, deactivating face/fingerprint unlocking and clear emergency strategies in the event of raids, arrests or border controls.
The following checklist will help you prepare your smartphone for ICE raids.
