ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is a US federal agency that is supposed to monitor and deport migrants, but in practice is known for systematic violence and abuse. It conducts raids in neighborhoods, workplaces and on the streets, repeatedly resulting in deadly violence by law enforcement officers, and engages in mass detentions and deportations that tear families apart and put entire communities in constant fear.
People without papers, but also people with legal status and supporters, are particularly affected. It is therefore essential for many to inform themselves about their rights, warn each other about ICE checks and surveillance and also prepare their smartphones: for example, by using strong passwords, up-to-date software, deactivating face/fingerprint unlocking and clear emergency strategies in the event of raids, arrests or border controls.
The following checklist will help you prepare your smartphone for ICE raids.
